Spending two hours a week in green spaces – local parks or other natural environments – makes you significantly more likely to be in good health and feel good psychologically than those who do not.
This finding emerges from a study of 20,000 people by the European Centre for Environment and Human Health at the University of Exeter. It comes at a time when many people spend too much time in urban environments and find themselves trapped between noise, pollution, stress and lack of space. Their desire to escape is therefore particularly justified by the need to breathe fresh air.
Health professionals agree that nature has many benefits for humans. Being in contact with nature:
- Improves your memory
- Promotes creativity and problem-solving
- Reduces the risk of depression and mental illness
- Develops learning skills
- Increases concentration
- Encourages you to be more active, which helps you maintain a healthy weight
- Reduces stress levels
- Improves sleep quality
Healthy mind, healthy body
Nature is an antidote to stress: it can reduce nervous system excitation, boost immune system function, increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety and improve mood. Attention deficit disorders and aggression are reduced in natural environments, which also helps to speed up the rate of recovery.
In a recent study conducted for Sépaq in 2021, researchers found that being in nature reduced feelings of isolation, promoted calm and improved patients’ moods. We can therefore deduce that choosing a living environment close to nature improves our well-being.
